WHAT IS 500 REASONS?
500 Reasons is a fundraising concept devoted to making the world a better place, started by an initial group of 500 people each donating £1/week. Each week, anyone from the group can nominate a good cause to be the beneficiary of £500. It might be a local library that's in danger of closing, a lady by you who's raising money for blankets for the homeless this Christmas, a trans woman raising money for gender affirming care or a family desperately raising funds for their child to have a life or death operation.We can cut through the bullshit, bureaucracy and red tape and come together to actually do something meaningful every week. No pretentious nonsense. Just a bunch of nice people putting their money where their mouth is to do a tiny bit to make the world a nicer place.
WHY WE ARE DOING IT
At the moment, the world just feels pretty horrid, a lot of the time; and it often feels like as individuals we can't make much of a difference. We all understand the power of collective action and we feel that this group is a small example of that.We adore the lack of hierarchy of the group, and just having a bunch of good people wanting to do some good feels, well, good!After benefitting from crowdfunding on a personal level, the administrators of the group felt they wanted to try and give back. So after hearing about this project, they decided to get involved.
HOW TO TAKE PART
• There is a WhatsApp group with all 500 members (it will have replies disabled to ensure no one gets spammed by random chat)
• On this group, the nominations for the week every Friday will be posted, where people will be able to vote in a poll for which cause should receive the £500 (no more than a few notifications per week - promise!)
• There will be a google doc connected to the chat, where people can at any time put forward causes they wish to be in the mix
• The administrators will select the ones to be voted on each week from the google doc (5 per week to start with) and all 500 people will have the opportunity to vote
• To join the group, I will require a screenshot that confirms you have set up a direct debit of £1 every week to the account
• There is a new bank account that collects the £1’s each week and the chat will receive confirmation when the £500 donation has been made
• If you wish to leave the group anytime, you just need to drop a message with as much notice as you can before the donation day and we shall replace you with someone else to keep the group at 500 people
